The MillerVantures Manifestos: why we build, what we believe, and how we judge every modification on this 2005 Chevy Astro.

More Than a Van. More Than an Adventure.

There are thousands of websites about overlanding.

Thousands of YouTube channels.

Thousands of product reviews.

MillerVantures isn't trying to be another one.

We're here for a different reason.

We Believe Adventure Begins Long Before the Engine Starts

Adventure isn't created by buying expensive gear.

It begins with thoughtful planning.

Careful craftsmanship.

Making smart decisions.

Building systems that are dependable.

And creating memories with the people you love.

For us, every modification, every road trip, every campsite, and every lesson learned is part of a much bigger journey.

We're documenting that journey so others can benefit from it.

Our Story

Hi, we're Darren and Tanya.

We're passionate about exploring British Columbia and beyond, building capable adventure vehicles, and sharing everything we learn along the way.

Our current project is a 2005 Chevrolet Astro Cargo Van.

Most people would have seen an old work van.

We saw potential.

Not because it would become the biggest or most expensive camper.

But because it could become one of the most thoughtfully built.

Every modification is carefully researched.

Every dollar is intentionally spent.

Every lesson is documented.

Because someone else might be standing exactly where we once stood.

Wondering…

"Where do I even begin?"

If we can answer that question, then this website has done its job.

The MillerVantures Philosophy

Before we install any part…

Before we spend any money…

Before we recommend anything…

We ask one simple question.

Does this make the vehicle…

  • More Reliable?
  • More Comfortable?
  • More Capable?
  • Easier to Maintain?

If the answer is no…

It probably doesn't belong.

That philosophy guides every decision we make.

We Don't Chase Trends

The overlanding industry changes every year.

New products.

New gadgets.

New "must-have" accessories.

Some are excellent.

Some simply add weight, cost, and complexity.

We believe the best adventure vehicles aren't the ones with the most accessories.

They're the ones you trust.

That's why reliability will always come before appearance.

Function will always come before hype.

Quality will always come before quantity.

Our Promise

We make one promise to every visitor.

If we recommend something…

It's because we'd confidently install it on our own vehicle.

Not because someone paid us.

Not because it's popular.

Not because it pays the biggest commission.

Because we genuinely believe it's the best choice.

Sometimes that recommendation includes an affiliate link.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Our opinion never changes because of a commission.

Your trust is worth far more than any affiliate payment.

Why We Document Everything

Most build threads show the finished product.

Few explain the journey.

We want to change that.

Every project includes:

  • Why we chose it.
  • Alternative products we considered.
  • Costs.
  • Installation.
  • Lessons learned.
  • Real-world testing.
  • Maintenance considerations.
  • Long-term updates.

If we make a mistake…

We'll document that too.

Because honest mistakes often teach more than perfect success.

The MillerVantures Build Standard

Every modification is evaluated against four standards.

Reliability

Does it reduce the chance of failure?

Does it increase confidence on remote adventures?

Comfort

Does it make travelling or camping more enjoyable?

Does it improve daily usability?

Capability

Does it expand where we can go or what we can do?

Does it improve safety or self-sufficiency?

Maintenance

Does it simplify repairs?

Can it be serviced easily?

Will it save time later?

If a modification improves one or more of these areas…

It earns its place.

Our website isn't just a blog.

It's an evolving knowledge library.

Inside you'll find:

  • Complete Build Guides — Step-by-step installation articles with photos, diagrams, and honest reviews.
  • Product Reviews — Based on real-world ownership. Not first impressions.
  • Wiring Diagrams — Simple. Organized. Designed for DIY builders.
  • Maintenance Logs — Every repair, every upgrade, every service. Exactly how we'd want to inherit a vehicle ourselves.
  • Adventure Guides — Campgrounds, road trips, overlanding routes, gear. Lessons from the trail.
  • Lessons Learned — Sometimes success. Sometimes mistakes. Always honest.

Why an Astro?

People often ask why we chose a Chevrolet Astro.

Simple.

It strikes an incredible balance.

Compact enough to drive every day.

Large enough to sleep comfortably.

Mechanically simple.

Affordable to own.

Capable with thoughtful upgrades.

It represents everything we believe.

Practical.

Reliable.

Purpose-built.

Our Long-Term Vision

Today we're documenting one Astro build.

Tomorrow…

It may be another vehicle.

Another adventure.

Another lesson.

The goal isn't to build the perfect camper.

The goal is to create one of the most useful adventure resources available.

A place where people can confidently learn.

Build.

Travel.

Explore.

And create their own memories.

Leave the Trail Better Than You Found It

That's good advice for camping.

It's even better advice for life.

So we've added one more principle.

Leave the knowledge better than you found it.

If someone visits MillerVantures and leaves knowing something they didn't know before…

We've succeeded.

Welcome to MillerVantures

We're glad you're here.

Whether you're restoring an old Astro…

Planning your first overland build…

Researching a product…

Or simply dreaming about your next adventure…

We hope you'll find something here that helps you build with confidence.

Travel farther.

And create memories that last a lifetime.

Our Motto

Build it once. Build it right. Share everything.
